Dosing/ 1 or 2 drops q 4 hr;   if severe, 2 drops hourly while in severe stage.

Class Aminoglycoside
Action Prevents bacterial protein synthesis by binding to s30 ribosomal subunit.
Activity Active against a wide variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria including
Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes,
Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes Escherichia coli; Haemophilus
influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens.
Usage Indicated in the treatment of external infections of the eye and adnexa.
Increasing resistance from community-acquired infections including Pseudomonas spp.,
Staphylococcus aureus and other Staphylococcus spp. and others.

Aminoglycoside toxicity possible with pre-sensitized pts. or with extended use.
Contraindications Known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Pediatric use > 2 months
Pregnancy There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Systemic
use can cause permanent fetal hearing loss. 500x the human ophthalmic dose
in Pregnant rats causes depresesses body weight in newborns.
Consider using a newer fluoroquinolone.
Also available as 0.3%, 3.5g ointment.
